Title: At World's End: Redux
Author: Laura H & Sal R
Rating: Overall R
Canon: AU, set post-DMC
Characters: Everyone from CotBP and DMC and also Captain Teague.
Pairings: Jack/Elizabeth - with elements of Jack/Beckett, Elizabeth/Will, Elizabeth/Norrington, and Calypso/Jones.
Disclaimer: For fun not profit
A/N: Same story, different versions. And all true.

Back in January, we set ourselves the challenge of retelling At World's End in time for the first anniversary of the movie's release this weekend. Over 100,000 words later, we've finished - just in time! We'll be posting two chapters a week (Sundays and Wednesdays) for the next several weeks, and we very much hope you'll enjoy it!

This is not the same story as the movie. Neither is it a story Disney could ever tell. It's darker and more adult than the original, and deals with some very non-Disney topics! ;-) Although we've kept some elements of the movie, the mythology is of our own creation and the fate of our favourite pirates and villains is by no means a fait accompli. In this story, anything can happen…

With thanks to djarum99 for the insightful beta, and to Disney for creating this wonderful world, we humbly offer At World's End: Redux in celebration of the PotC trilogy.

not the end

Wow, can't wait for more...love how you've dealt with and changed canon. Fascinated by Jones' recognition of Beckett's "thing" for Jack. And I liked how the coins are central here, how you have to kill a Pirate Lord to get one...same kind of system as that controlling who is Captain of the Dutchman.

Interesting that here the Kraken wasn't killed by Jones...maybe Jack took it down with him?

I'm really glad the mythology is working for you so far - it's something we examine in more depth later on. Especially the nature of the coins and the Brethren.

With the Kraken, it's open to interpretation ;) We tried to use its death as being symbollic of the passing of an age without giving too much detail. But I do kinda like that idea of Jack taking it down with him :D

Thanks so much for reading and commenting and I hope you enjoy the upcoming chapters!

Lizzie thoughtful

This is so wonderful! I loved Elizabeth/Will and Beckett/Davy Jones interactions. And I love the way in which you portray Elizabeth, you capture all her emotions so beautifully. Amazing beginning! I can't wait for more!!! :)

Oh thanks so much! It's good to know the other character interactions are working for you because it's so easy to get wrapped up in Jack/Elizabeth, so thank you for that feedback.

More to come tomorrow night :D

I absolutely love the details you went into that were not in the movie. It makes it a much better story than the actual movie. The boy's background and how he came to know and be the one to sing the song, the first meeting of Davy Jones and Beckett(and Beckett sounds absolutely perfect, I hear his snotty little voice in my head as I read his dialog!!). Everything is so enjoyable so far, Will & Elizabeth's interaction, Tia & Elizabeth's conversation, and Barbossa's awesome. I always liked that guy. What he said at the end to Elizabeth was exactly something I imagine he'd say! I can't wait to read the rest of this, I am so happy you have done it!

Thank you for such a lovely comment and I'm really pleased that you're enjoying the added details.

We're trying to be as original as possible while keeping the story and characters as recognisable as possible, so it can be tough to juggle sometimes. it's great to get feedback like yours, because then we know we're doing something right :D

I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to print off this story so I can read it wherever I am. I've only read the prologue and the first part of chapter one, but already I feel as if I'm home. This is so beautifully written, and promises to be an exciting and moving tale. There is so much I want to point out as being wonderfully conveyed and thought-provoking, but if I did, I'd end up quoting the whole thing in my comment! A couple of things that stand out though: Teague, mysterious and vivid. The prologue, enchanting. Jack's significance and what he means to the slaves he freed, very moving.

I love it, and I can't wait to read more. :)

Oh that's such a compliment that you're enjoying it so much!

It was a bit daunting posting the first chapter after we'd spent so long writing it and we were rather nervous so it's very reassuring when readers such as yourself take the time to leave a lovely comment like this. Thank you so much :D

small eye

First, thank you both for taking on the challenge of writing this, I'm positive it would have paled in hands other than your very capable ones.

It is off to a fabulous start. I love having Teague be a part of this right from the start, Tia and Elizabeth having more interaction - I already want more between them, Davey Jones feels more cunning here than in the films - he is always being duped in the films, I like that he has Beckett's number and Barbossa figuring out Lizzie has killed Jack and the way he does figures it out - wonderful!

*trots off to read Ch 3*

Thank you so much for such a compliment.

Although the creation of Teague was more a sort of in-joke for the movie, there is so much more potential for the character, as has been shown by the wealth of stories about him. We really just wanted to explore what would happen if his character did play a larger part in the AWE universe.

The Tia/Elizabeth scenes we felt were important to provide some sort of connection between two very strong, but very different, female characters. More of that later.

I'm really pleased you're enjoying the story so far and that you enjoy the future chapters too. Chapter four up tomorrow night :D

Thank you! Hope you continue to enjoy the story. We didn't want to deviate completely from the original movie, but rather tie it in and gradually move it in a different direction. Glad you're enoying it so far :D

It has taken me a bloody long time to get to this... but, as I knew it would be, your skillful, beautifully woven collaboration was well worth the wait. I have chills from that last scene, and can see each interaction playing out as if it were filmed. Amazing -- I am off to catch up!

I've just started this story and already I'm completely drawn in by it. The back story and characterization that we were all hoping would be shown in AWE are here in your story. I can't wait to read more!!
